Common AC Problems We Fix in Wylie

Pick what your AC is doing to see the likely causes and what to do before a technician gets there.

Blowing warm air

Likely causes

  • A thermostat set to FAN instead of COOL
  • A clogged filter
  • Low refrigerant from a leak

What to do now: Check the thermostat setting and the filter, then look for a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit.

In an early-2000s Wylie house on its original system, that leak could be R-22.

Why an AC blows warm air

Won't turn on

Likely causes

  • A tripped breaker
  • A thermostat or control wiring fault
  • A failed capacitor or contactor

What to do now: Check the thermostat and the breaker. If the breaker tripped, reset it once, and if it trips again, leave it off.

Ice on the lines

Likely causes

  • A clogged filter restricting airflow
  • Low refrigerant
  • A frozen evaporator coil

What to do now: Turn cooling off at the thermostat and set the fan to ON, so the moving air thaws the coil.

Water leaking inside

Likely causes

  • A clogged condensate drain line
  • A frozen coil starting to thaw

What to do now: Switch the system off at the thermostat and move anything the water could damage.

Why an AC leaks water

Loud or rattling

Likely causes

  • A loose panel
  • A failing fan motor

What to do now: If the noise is new or getting worse, switch the system off at the thermostat and call.

Breaker keeps tripping

Likely causes

  • A struggling compressor
  • A weak capacitor
  • An electrical fault

What to do now: Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off, because repeated trips need a technician.

In a 2004 Wylie house still on its original system, that compressor is more than 20 years old.

Runs all day without cooling

Likely causes

  • A clogged filter
  • Dirty condenser coils
  • Low refrigerant from a leak

What to do now: Check the filter and make sure nothing is blocking the outdoor unit.

Flattened condenser fins are another possible cause if the unit sat through the 2016 hail.

We can’t recommend Stork’s enough! Shelby was our technician and was the best! He was incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and got our AC working again in no time! Tim and Shelby are fantastic! My first contact was with Tim over the phone and he was very personable and checked to make sure they could come to my home same day before scheduling the repair visit (I live in a rural area pretty far Northeast of Dallas.) Shelby showed up at the beginning of the quoted window, and immediately started running diagnostics and found the problem. He was also very personable and polite. Their pricing is reasonable and I look forward to working with this company in the future.

AC Repair Services in Wylie

Our technicians work under Texas HVAC License #TACLB162195E, on every make and model, and repair central air conditioning systems, including:

AC Problems Specific to Wylie Homes

AC Refrigerant Leak Repair: Check for R-22 First

New central AC systems built for R-22 stopped being made in 2010, and about 46% of Wylie's homes went up in the ten years before that.

A house from early in that decade with its original system is more likely to be on R-22 than one from the end of it, and many will have been replaced since, so go by the label and not by the year the house was built.

An R-22 system can legally keep running, but U.S. production and import of the refrigerant ended in 2020, so a recharge now draws on reclaimed or older supply. On a 20-year-old Wylie system, that can turn a leak into a replacement conversation, so ask which refrigerant the quote involves and where the leak is.

Check this yourself: Read the label on your outdoor unit before anyone quotes you a repair. It says which refrigerant yours runs on.

Hail Damage to AC Condensers in Wylie

If your outdoor unit was in place in spring 2016, its fins may have been flattened and never fixed.

The National Weather Service records that the storm of April 11, 2016 affected 80% of Wylie's homes and caused over $300 million in damage. It came about three weeks after another bad one, and a State Farm claims manager told CBS that some homeowners would owe a second deductible for the second hit. Fox 4 reported that Wylie ISD had just replaced about 40 school HVAC units totaled in a storm not long before. We found no published count of damaged home units, and with two deductibles in three weeks, a dented condenser could easily have been left as it was.

Flattened fins on the coil block the air the unit needs to shed heat.

Check this yourself: Look at the sides of the unit with a flashlight. Leave any flat patches for a technician.

Is Your Outdoor AC Unit's Pad Still Level?

Ground that moves can tilt a pad, and a tilted unit strains the refrigerant lines.

The Handbook of Texas describes deep clay across central and western Collin County and dark loamy soil in the east, and it places Wylie in the south-central part of the county. The USDA describes one Blackland Prairie clay opening cracks up to four inches wide in dry spells. The city's 2012 plan also counts 21% of its land as floodplain, along Muddy, Rush and Cottonwood creeks and the East Fork of the Trinity, so a yard near one of those can stay wetter than one across town.

Check this yourself: Check whether the pad still sits level against the house.

AC Repair or Replacement?

Census estimates put the median Wylie home at 2004, so a house from that year still on its first system is running equipment more than 20 years old. Age alone doesn't settle it: a failed capacitor can be worth fixing on an old system, while a compressor or a coil leak is where to compare the repair against a replacement.

If a new system wins, the City of Wylie requires a permit for the replacement, as our Wylie air conditioning page explains.

Still stuck? Call 972-421-8000.

  • Same-day appointments are available, so call 972-421-8000 and we'll tell you the soonest one we have. If it's an emergency, HVAC service runs 24/7.

  • It covers sending a technician to your home and the diagnostic that finds the cause. You get the price of the repair before any work starts, and you decide from there.

  • Check your main breaker, then call your electric utility. Wylie has more than one provider, and your bill says which serves your address.

  • Not necessarily. About 46% of Wylie's homes date from 2000 to 2009, and many will have had the system replaced since, so the build year won't tell you. The label on your outdoor unit names the refrigerant.

  • The city's permit list names air conditioning and heating system installs and replacements, plus miscellaneous mechanical work. It doesn't spell out where a routine part swap falls. City of Wylie Building Inspection at the Municipal Complex on Country Club Road can give you a firm answer for your job.
