Electrical Panel Upgrade in Wylie, TX

Your local, family-owned Wylie electrician for panel upgrades. Our brand new office is right here on Williams Street.

Census estimates count about 1,350 of Wylie's 19,196 homes from before 1980, about 3,550 from 1980 to 1999, and about 74.5% from 2000 or later. In a city that young, most panels are not old, so the question is more often whether the panel has room for what you want to add, such as a charger or a generator.

A visit starts with the $89 dispatch fee, which includes checking your panel. You get an upfront quote before any work starts, and the permit is ours to pull.

We also do general electrical work, generator installation and EV charger installation in Wylie.

Electrical Panel Upgrade Services in Wylie

The panel is where power from the utility splits into the circuits that run your house. When it is full, worn out or too small for what you plug into it, the fix is a bigger or newer panel, installed by a licensed electrician. Our electrical team handles the panel work, including:

100 to 200 Amp Panel Upgrades

A larger panel gives the house room for modern loads such as an EV charger, a bigger air conditioner or a kitchen remodel. We start with a load calculation to confirm what the home needs, then handle the permit and the inspection. The main panel upgrade page walks through the whole job.

Replacing an Outdated Panel

An old fuse box, or a panel an inspector or electrician has flagged, may be worth replacing. We install a new panel and breakers, move every circuit over and check the tightness of each connection. A loose connection is where later trouble starts.

Meter and Service Entrance Work

When an upgrade changes the service coming into the house, the meter base and the wiring up to it may change too. That part involves your utility, and the utility may need to disconnect and reconnect power at the meter. We go over what to expect before the day.

Adding Circuits and Breaker Space

If you've run out of open slots, a new panel can give you room for a dedicated circuit for a charger, a workshop, a pool or an addition. We size the new circuits to the load and the panel to the whole house.

Surge Protection at the Panel

A surge protector can be built into or mounted beside the panel, so it guards every circuit. When the panel is being replaced anyway, it is the natural time to add one. Our guide to whole-home surge protection explains what it does.

Circuit Labeling

Every breaker gets a clear, specific label in the panel directory, so you and the next electrician can tell what each one controls. It is a small step that saves time on every later job.

Two items on this list have a Wylie angle: circuit labeling, which Wylie's amendment to the 2020 electrical code addresses, and surge protection when a panel is replaced.

You don't need to know your panel's size or brand before you call. Tell us what you're trying to add or what's going wrong, and the electrician will check it at the visit.

What's Sending You to Your Panel?

Pick what you're seeing to find the usual reasons behind it and what to do next. None of it involves removing the panel cover. Leave the cover on and let an electrician look inside.

Breakers trip often

What's usually behind it

  • Too many loads on one circuit
  • A breaker that has weakened with age
  • A fault in a circuit or an appliance
  • A panel carrying more than it was sized for

What to do next: Note what was running when it tripped and move one of those loads to another circuit. If it trips with very little on it, leave it off and book a panel check.

No open breaker slots

What's usually behind it

  • A panel with few spaces from the start
  • Circuits added one at a time over the years
  • Breakers doubled up to share a space

What to do next: List what you want to add, such as a charger, a workshop or an addition, and bring the list to the visit. Please don't double up breakers yourself.

Adding an EV charger

What's usually behind it

  • A charger needs its own high-amperage circuit
  • The panel may have no spare room for it
  • The whole house load may need to be worked out again

What to do next: Write down the charger model, the amperage it calls for and where it will mount. A load calculation at the visit shows whether your panel can take it.

Adding a generator

What's usually behind it

  • A generator connects to the panel through a transfer switch
  • The panel needs room for that connection
  • The size of the service limits what the generator can back up

What to do next: Decide which circuits you want running during an outage, and note the generator size you have in mind.

For a generator, the city's backup system form asks for an electrical permit that covers changes to the home's service equipment.

Adding a big appliance or an addition

What's usually behind it

  • A larger air conditioner, range, hot tub or pool equipment draws serious current
  • New rooms need circuits of their own
  • A load calculation may show the existing service is nearly used up

What to do next: List the appliances and the square footage you're adding. The electrician runs the load numbers at the visit.

An older panel brand

What's usually behind it

  • A brand that has drawn attention in older homes
  • Original equipment that has been in service for decades
  • A fuse box in place of a breaker panel

What to do next: Read the brand name on the label on the panel door and write it down. Don't open the cover, and bring the name to the visit.

Around 1,350 Wylie homes date from before 1980 and another 1,474 from the 1980s, so an older panel brand could turn up in either group.

A warm or buzzing panel

What's usually behind it

  • A loose connection
  • A breaker that is failing
  • A circuit overloaded for a long time
  • Corrosion around the breakers

What to do next: Stop using the circuits you can, leave the cover on and call. Don't keep resetting a breaker that is hot or buzzing. If you smell burning, see smoke or hear crackling from the panel, leave the house and call 911.

A home inspector's note

What's usually behind it

  • A panel brand or age the inspector flagged
  • A panel with no room left
  • Missing or vague circuit labels

What to do next: Get the note in writing and bring it to the visit, so the electrician can check what it refers to.

A panel replacement is on the City of Wylie's list of work that needs a permit, so a fix that follows an inspector's note goes through the city.

Used stork for an HVAC issue and an electrical issue. James was exceptional- explained everything and gave us a lot of valuable insights and ideas to resolve our HVAC issue in the most economical manner. Jimmy (the electrician) was also great - gave us 2 options and didn’t push us to do anything. I highly recommend Stork and will use them again.

Panel Upgrades in Wylie Homes: What Applies Here

Panel Upgrade Permits and Circuit Labels in Wylie

A panel upgrade is on the City of Wylie's permit list, and Wylie's amendment to the 2020 National Electrical Code asks that every circuit be labeled for its specific purpose.

The City of Wylie's Building Inspection page lists "Electrical service panel upgrades and replacements" among the projects that require a permit. For residential permits, the city's page gives a turnaround of 5 to 10 business days, so the permit belongs in your schedule. We pull the permit for the upgrade. Inspections are booked through Citizen Serve or by phone on weekdays, and construction work is limited to 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with no Sundays or federal holidays.

Wylie also adopted its own amendment to the 2020 National Electrical Code, section 408.4. It says every circuit and circuit modification must be legibly identified as to its clear, evident and specific purpose. The ordinance that adopts it calls the code the commercial electrical code, so ask City of Wylie Building Inspection whether it reaches a house. Either way, a directory reading "kitchen counter outlets" is more useful than one that says "misc."

Check this yourself: Open only the hinged panel door, with dry hands, and read the directory card. Labels like "misc" or "bedroom" are the vague kind. Leave the cover behind the door in place.

Surge Protection When a Wylie Panel Is Replaced

The 2020 edition of the electrical code, which the city's codes page lists, calls for surge protection where service equipment is replaced.

Section 230.67 of the 2020 National Electrical Code, the edition on the City of Wylie's codes page, calls for a surge-protective device on services that supply dwellings. Its replacement clause says that where service equipment is replaced, surge protection goes in with it, and an IAEI summary of the 2020 changes says the same about service equipment that is upgraded or replaced.

So surge protection belongs on the panel quote, and the device can sit in the panel or right next to it, as our guide to whole-home surge protection explains. The same code edition also has an outdoor disconnect rule for one- and two-family homes, so ask your electrician whether it applies to your job.

Check this yourself: When you get any panel quote, look for a surge protection line and ask where the device mounts.

Federal Pacific Panels in Wylie's Older Homes

About 1,350 Wylie homes date from before 1980, and Federal Pacific is one older panel brand worth knowing by name.

Census estimates put about 1,350 of Wylie's 19,196 homes, around 7%, before 1980. Federal Pacific, also sold as Stab-Lok, is an older panel brand whose breakers were the subject of a federal investigation.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission closed its 1983 investigation of Federal Pacific breakers without making a determination about their safety. It is neither a recall nor a finding that they are safe. The advice is what matters: don't just keep resetting a breaker that trips, and find out why it does.

Check this yourself: Read the brand name on the label on the panel door or cover. Don't open the cover to look inside.

Panel Upgrades and Your Wylie Utility

A change to your service involves the company that owns the wires to your house, and in Wylie that is not the same company at every address.

The City of Wylie names both Oncor and Farmers Electric Cooperative in its backup system permit form. A change to the service itself, such as a larger service, can involve your utility, and which one depends on your address. We'll go over who to contact before the work date.

Check this yourself: Check your electric bill for the company name and the number to call, then tell us when you book.

Electrical Panel Repair or Upgrade?

A single failed breaker, or one that trips on one circuit, is usually a repair. A panel out of open slots, or one that has to carry a new EV charger or generator, points toward an upgrade. Wylie's mix of homes is about 1,350 from before 1980, about 3,550 from 1980 to 1999, and about 74.5% from 2000 or later.

In the newer majority, the question is more often whether the panel has room for what you want to add.

Panel Upgrade Questions From Wylie

For how a panel upgrade works in general, see our main panel upgrade page.

Still stuck? Call 972-421-8000.

  • Frequent tripped breakers, no open slots, a fuse box, or a new EV charger or generator on the way all point that direction. A panel check will tell you whether you need a new panel or a smaller fix.

  • It covers sending an electrician to your home to check the panel. You get an upfront quote before any work starts, and you decide from there.

  • Yes. We pull the permit, and the work is inspected by your city when it is done.

  • How long it takes depends on the house and on whether the service changes. The power is off while the old panel comes out, and a service change can involve your utility, so we go over timing at the visit.

  • Often, yes. A new panel can leave room for a dedicated circuit for a charger or the connection for a generator. The load calculation at the visit confirms it.

  • Yes. The City of Wylie's list of work requiring permits names electrical service panel upgrades and replacements. For residential permits, the city's page gives a turnaround of 5 to 10 business days, and we pull the permit.

  • Only in a narrow case. The city's homeowner affidavit is for your own homestead, requires a notarized oath that you will do all the work yourself, and does not fit a job you hire out. A contractor pulls the permit for everyone else.

  • Not necessarily. About 1,350 Wylie homes date from before 1980, and a panel can have been replaced since. The brand on the label on the panel door tells you, and you can read it without removing the cover.

  • The 2020 code edition that the city's codes page lists calls for surge protection where service equipment is replaced. Ask for a surge protection line on the quote and where the device will mount.

  • It depends on who serves your address. The city names both Oncor and Farmers Electric, and your electric bill shows which company is on your account. Tell us when you book, and we'll go over who to contact.
