Generator Installation in Wylie, TX

Your local, family-owned Wylie electrician for generator installation. Our brand new office is right here on Williams Street.

A generator job in Wylie can involve the city's Residential Misc. permits, Atmos or CoServ for gas, and one of the more than 40 HOA subdivisions on the city's directory, depending on your house. We look at your home, tell you which city permits the job needs and give you an upfront quote. Your HOA's rules are in your declaration, and the sections below say what to look for.

The $89 dispatch fee covers the visit to look at your home and the spot where the generator would go. You get the quote before any work starts.

We also handle electrical repairs, panel upgrades and EV charger installation in Wylie.

Generator Installation Services in Wylie

A generator only helps if it is sized for what you want running, connected to your wiring through a switch that keeps power from flowing back to the lines, and fed with fuel. Our licensed electricians handle the electrical side and coordinate the fuel connection, including:

Standby Generators

A standby generator sits outside on a pad like an AC unit and starts on its own when the power drops. It can run on natural gas or propane, so there are no gas cans to fill. We install the unit, set it on its pad and connect it to your home.

Automatic Transfer Switches

The transfer switch senses the outage, disconnects your home from the grid and moves the load to the generator. It also keeps power from flowing back onto the utility lines, which protects the crews working to restore your street. We wire it in at your panel.

Sizing the Load

Bigger is not automatically better, and an oversized unit costs more to buy and to run. We start from what you want powered during an outage, with extra attention to air conditioning, because it needs more power to start than to run. You can back up the whole house or just the essential circuits.

Fuel Connection

A natural gas generator needs a gas line run to the pad, and a propane one needs its tank connected. We coordinate the fuel connection with a licensed gas professional and place the unit to meet the clearances from windows and property lines.

Generator Inlets for Portable Units

If you already own a portable generator, an inlet on the outside of the house lets you plug it in through a transfer switch instead of running cords through a window. It is a smaller job than a standby install and a much safer way to use the generator you have.

Testing and Handover

We pull the permits where they apply, test the system and walk you through it. A standby unit runs a short self-test on a schedule, so you will see it start up now and then and know it is working.

Fuel connections involve gas piping that the city still permits and tests, and the transfer switch is part of the service equipment the city still inspects.

Not sure which of these you need? Book a visit, tell us what you want to keep running, and we'll go through the options with an upfront quote.

Why Are You Thinking About a Generator?

Pick the reason that sounds like your house to see what it comes down to and what to do next. A generator is a big purchase, so it helps to know what you need it to run before anyone talks about models.

Long outages

What it comes down to

  • Storms that take down lines
  • Ice on trees and wires in winter
  • Repairs that take days when many customers are out at once

What to do next: Write down what you would need to keep running for a few days, such as the fridge, some lights and a way to charge phones. That list is the start of any sizing.

The outage number on the City of Wylie's winter storm page is Oncor's, 888-313-4747. Wylie also has Farmers Electric members, and your bill shows which company serves you.

Medical equipment at home

What it comes down to

  • A device that needs steady power, such as an oxygen concentrator
  • Medication that has to stay cold
  • A built-in battery that only lasts a few hours

What to do next: Ask the device maker how long its battery lasts, and ask your care provider about a backup plan. A generator is one part of that plan, not all of it.

Working from home

What it comes down to

  • A router and computer that stop with the power
  • A workday that depends on the internet
  • A business line that can't go quiet

What to do next: Decide whether the generator needs to carry just the office circuits or more of the house. A smaller setup can cover a few essential circuits.

A freezer or fridge full of food

What it comes down to

  • A chest freezer in the garage
  • A second fridge that stays stocked
  • Several days of groceries lost to one long outage

What to do next: Note which appliances you would want on a backup circuit. Big freezers and fridges are usually on the list.

A heat pump or electric heat

What it comes down to

  • Electric heat and heat pumps stop when the power does
  • A gas furnace can still need electricity for its blower and controls
  • Summer cooling is the heaviest load many homes carry

What to do next: List the heating and cooling equipment you want running. Air conditioning has a high startup demand, and it decides how large the generator has to be.

About half of Wylie homes report electricity as their main heating fuel, so for those homes an outage can take the heat out along with the lights.

A storm season coming

What it comes down to

  • Spring storms and summer heat
  • Winter ice
  • Waiting until a storm is in the forecast, when there is no time to plan

What to do next: Book the visit before the weather turns, so the quote, the permits and the install are not rushed.

The City of Wylie closed its facilities except for essential services from January 26 to 28, 2026, for a winter storm.

An HOA in the neighborhood

What it comes down to

  • Rules on where equipment can sit
  • Screening and testing-time rules
  • An approval step before work starts

What to do next: Read your declaration's generator language and ask your HOA whether approval is needed before anyone starts work.

The City of Wylie's directory lists more than 40 HOA subdivisions, so many Wylie homes have a declaration worth reading before a generator is priced.

A portable generator you want to connect properly

What it comes down to

  • Extension cords run through windows or doors
  • No safe way to feed the house circuits
  • Fuel to store and refill

What to do next: Run a portable generator outdoors, with the exhaust pointed away from the house, never in a garage, and never plug it into a wall outlet to power the house. Keep battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms working inside. A generator inlet with a transfer switch is the proper way to connect one.

The City of Wylie's own advice is to use generators outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows.

Generator Rules and Outages in Wylie

Generator Installation Inspections in Wylie Since September 2025

Since September 1, 2025, the city checks the service equipment and the gas piping on a backup generator job, and does not check the generator itself.

Texas Senate Bill 1252 stopped cities from regulating or inspecting a residential backup energy system "capable of providing no more than 50 kilowatts" to the home. Wylie's form for these jobs says the city now inspects only the service side: the main disconnect, grounding and bonding of the service equipment, and parts such as a transfer switch or gateway that belong to it. The city says it will not inspect the generator itself.

Gas piping and service changes still need permits. A Residential Misc. Building/Plumbing permit covers the gas line and its leak test, and a Residential Misc. Building/Electrical permit covers changes to the service equipment. Applications go through the city's Citizen Serve portal, and work falls under Wylie's construction hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with no Sundays or federal holidays. With nobody from the city checking the generator, it is worth asking who is accountable for the installation and whether it follows the manufacturer's instructions.

Check this yourself: Ask your installer in writing who is accountable for the generator's installation, and whether it follows the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Standby Generators and Wylie HOAs

A Wylie HOA generally can't ban a permanent standby generator of at least 7 kilowatts, but it can still set rules on where it goes.

The city's directory lists more than 40 HOA subdivisions. Texas Property Code 202.019 says an association generally can't prohibit or restrict a permanently installed standby generator rated at least 7 kilowatts, in a manufacturer's enclosure and connected through a transfer switch. It can adopt rules on screening, location and testing times, though a location rule is unenforceable if it adds more than 10% to the cost of installing the generator, or more than 20% to the cost of connecting its electrical and fuel lines.

This is a summary, not legal advice, so read your own declaration and the current text of Property Code 202.019.

Check this yourself: Find the generator and exterior-improvement language in your declaration, and ask your HOA whether approval is needed before work starts.

Gas Line for a Generator in Wylie: Don't Assume It's There

About half of Wylie homes heat with electricity, so a house may not have a gas line to hook a generator to.

Census figures for 2019 to 2023 put electricity as the main heating fuel in 52.4% of Wylie's occupied homes and utility gas in 44.8%. The two are within each other's margin of error, so call it about half and half. The city's 2025 resolution names Atmos Energy as its gas utility, and the Wylie EDC also lists CoServ Gas as a provider.

A natural gas generator needs piping run to its pad, and the city requires a Residential Misc. Building/Plumbing permit for it. For meter connections, the city notifies Atmos, CoServ, Farmers Electric and Oncor. Whether a generator adds enough gas load to need an Atmos load review or a new meter is a question to settle at the visit, before the quote.

Check this yourself: Look at your bills for a gas company name. Atmos Energy or CoServ Gas on a bill means you have gas service, and no gas bill at all means a different fuel plan.

Backup Generators and Outages Around Wylie

Storms around Wylie in recent years run from ice in February 2022 to the May 2024 outages and a winter storm in January 2026.

On May 28, 2024, KERA News reported more than 500,000 customers across North Texas without power by an Oncor tracker, with Collin among the counties named. On February 2, 2022, the National Weather Service reported a quarter-inch of freezing rain in Wylie. The city closed its facilities except for essential services from January 26 to 28, 2026, during a winter storm.

These events show the weather the grid faces here. They don't tell you how often your own street loses power.

Check this yourself: Write down what you'd want running in an outage, and bring the list to the visit.

Standby Generator or Portable?

A standby generator with a transfer switch starts on its own and runs from a gas line or a propane tank, so it works when you are asleep or away. It is a permanent installation, so the Wylie points above apply: the city's gas and service-side permits, and an HOA's rules on screening and location if you have one. A portable generator is the simpler place to start and can be connected through an inlet and a transfer switch, but someone has to be home to fuel it and set it up.

Wherever it sits, keep a portable generator outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, which is the City of Wylie's own advice for carbon monoxide. Never run one in a garage or carport, even with the door open. Point the exhaust away from the house, and keep battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms working inside.

  • It covers the visit to look at your home. You get an upfront quote before any work starts, and you decide from there.

  • It can, if it is sized for that. Many homes back up only the essential circuits with a smaller unit instead. We size it from what you want powered, with air conditioning's startup demand counted.

  • Yes. Any generator that feeds your home's wiring needs a transfer switch, or an interlock kit paired with a generator inlet, installed by an electrician. That keeps power from flowing back onto the utility lines, where it can hurt line crews. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet.

  • Standby generators can run on either. A natural gas unit needs a gas line to the pad, and we coordinate that connection with a licensed gas professional.

  • Yes, where they apply. Which permits a job needs depends on the gas piping and electrical work involved, and we'll go through that at the visit.

  • Not the generator itself. Since September 1, 2025, the city's inspection covers the service side (the main disconnect, grounding and bonding, and a transfer switch or gateway) plus gas piping.

  • Generally not for a permanent standby unit of at least 7 kilowatts, under Texas Property Code 202.019. It can set rules on screening, location and testing times, so read your declaration and ask about approval first.

  • The city's form lists a Residential Misc. Building/Plumbing permit for gas piping and a Residential Misc. Building/Electrical permit for changes to the service equipment. No plan submittal is required for the electrical permit.

  • The City of Wylie says to use generators outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows. Keep it out of the garage too.
